Trap Neuter Release
Community cats need our help to manage their populations and protect both their health and our own. Learn more about the resources in our community to provide spay/neuter surgeries to community cats.
Community Cats and TNR
Community cats are feral or friendly stray cats that exist outdoors, essentially as a population of "wild" animals. Feral cats are not socialized and avoid interactions with humans. Friendly stray cats will willingly interact with people for attention and tolerate handling.
Community cats will reproduce endlessly without our help, which can negatively impact the environment, human health, and ultimately the health and well being of the community cats themselves. Trap Neuter Release (TNR) is the process of using a humane trap to capture a community cat, having them spayed or neutered by a veterinarian, and then releasing them back to where they originally came from. The solution is not getting rid of these animals. These areas are already established habitats for the community cats, so if some leave, more take their place. The best option is to help manage their populations.
There are simple ways YOU can help manage the community cats in your area. Local humane societies and shelter may have programs available to provide spay/neuter services for community cats.
How does this relate to neonates?
Many of our rescue intakes come from community cat populations. It is essential to determine where the neonates came from to initiate TNR in those areas. Many rescues and shelters, ourselves included, struggle to have enough volunteers to tackle this issue. Community members who are motivated to help with TNR can greatly impact the community cats in their area. Email us to find out more about how you can help with TNR.
